Snow and Ice Control

The Village of Lake Villa’s Public Works Department works extended hours during winter weather events to plow snow and remove ice from roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and pedestrian areas. Our goal is to maintain safe travel conditions for residents, businesses, and emergency services as efficiently as possible.

Street Maintenance Responsibilities

The Village is responsible for plowing and clearing approximately 59 miles of Village-maintained streets.

  • Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) maintains IL Routes 83 and 132
  • Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) plows:
    • Deep Lake Road
    • Grass Lake Road
    • Fairfield Road
    • Petite Lake Road
  • All other roads within Lake Villa are maintained by the Village.

Snow Removal Priorities

During significant or prolonged winter weather events, snow and ice removal is prioritized to ensure safe access throughout the community. The Village follows this general order:

  1. Village Streets
Crews focus first on Village-maintained roadways to maintain access for residents and emergency responders.

  2. Village Parking Lots and Sidewalks
This includes Village facilities and public access areas.
Note: Platforms adjacent to Metra tracks are maintained by Metra.

  3. Pedestrian Walkways Around Parks
Priority is given to walkways serving parks and community facilities.

  4. Central Business District & Park Properties
During major snow events, snow may be hauled or relocated in downtown and park areas as conditions require.

Parking & Snow Removal Reminders

  • Do not push or plow snow into the street. This creates hazardous conditions and is prohibited by Village ordinance.
  • Parking is restricted after a minimum 2-inch snowfall. Vehicles are not permitted on Village-maintained streets until plowing is completed edge-to-edge.
  • Snow may accumulate at the end of driveways as plows pass. Please place shoveled snow on your yard or parkway, not back into the roadway.

Mailbox Damage Information

If your mailbox has been damaged by a Village snowplow, please contact Village Hall at (847) 356-6100 or submit a request through the Village Request for Service System.

  • The Village will replace damaged mailboxes with a standard U.S. Postal Service delivery mailbox or
  • Provide up to $50 reimbursement for residents who choose to replace the mailbox themselves
  • The Village is responsible only for damage caused directly by Village plow equipment
